Mens wool pea coat or pea coat is a type of heavy coat used by sailors. Originally the color was navy but nowadays it’s a dark shade of navy it almost looks black. The only time it is not of this color is when it is made for women, and then the colors like red, olive or loden is available. Most manufacturers use what is known as Melton 80 % wool. Other than that the only difference is in the thickness which can vary from one design to the next.

Whatever the size or thickness the mens wool pea coat have been designed to protect from the cold and humidity which is why it was and is a popular clothing item amongst sailors. It was a type of cloth known as p-cloth or Dutch cloth, p-cloth is an abbreviation for pilot cloth. That is how the name got stuck and over time it was written as pea coats.
